Download WeChat from your home store. Open Weixin Pay inside it: Me → Pay and Services → Wallet. A +86 number is not required if SMS works.

Before you fly, bind an international card in Weixin Pay and keep Alipay ready too — some shops are Alipay-only or WeChat-only.

Optional: as of PayPal’s 11 Aug 2026 notice, eligible U.S. PayPal accounts can pay some Weixin Pay merchants via PayPal World. That does not replace Alipay or WeChat Pay, and it is not “any overseas wallet.” FX is PayPal’s rate.

A 2026 Tencent campaign waived the 3% fee for 90 days from the first transaction, up to RMB 1,000/day, for first-time international-card users. Do not treat that as permanent.
