Private stay registration
Staying in a private home, Airbnb, or a friend’s place? You must register with the local police within 24 hours of arrival. You or your host can do it (Exit-Entry Law, Article 39).
Since 21 September 2026 you can register online anywhere in mainland China: NIA website, "NIA 12367" app, or the "NIA 12367" WeChat or Alipay mini program. Your host should help with the first registration.
Online registration counts the same as registering at the police station, and the police station option still works.
Hotels register you. Private stays do not. If you move, register again. Visa-free travellers are not exempt.
If you don’t register: a warning, and possibly a fine of up to RMB 2,000 (Article 76).
